Plastic coffee pods containing BPA or BPS may cause cancer

It is nice to wake up in the morning to a nice cup of hot coffee. It is a real eye opener – delicious, warm and a beginning to a new day. However,  do we ever think about the plastic used to hold the coffee?

Most plastic used in the food industry is not BPA free and this goes for most coffee pods. Even if it is BPA free plastic – it is still plastic – full of estrogen – related to the plastics used in the manufacture of either plastic bottles, containers or coffee pods.

ARE BPA’s Harmful?

Bis-phenol-A — better known as BPA — is an industrial chemical that’s used in many household plastics and food packages. It’s capable of interfering with the body’s hormones, particularly estrogen, and scientists have linked BPA exposure to diseases like cancer and diabetes, according to the Environmental Defense Fund.

Most coffee pods used in Coffee Pod Machines are constructed of BPA or BPS plastics.
Use Scissors to trim the plastic away. This is not a 100% solution but it will reduce your exposure to harmful BPA and BPS contaminates found in plastics.

BPA is a synthetic estrogen that can disrupt the endocrine system – even in small amounts.

The FDA in 2012 banned all BPA’s in all baby food containers and bottles and you can see the signage on all the packaging when you walk the baby aisle in any grocery store. However, these same containers now screaming BPA free are now being made with BPS – another equally toxic analog in the same chemical class, known as bisphenol S (BPS).

This has enabled manufacturers of products as varied as thermal printer receipts to baby bottles and sippy cups to advertise their products as “BPA-fre,” while still exposing consumers to potentially harmful, and less regulated chemicals.

IS BPS any better?

Yet BPS is getting out. Nearly 81 percent of Americans have detectable levels of BPS in their urine. And once it enters the body it can affect cells in ways that parallels BPA, says Scientific American.

It – BPA and BPS has been linked to a wide variety of problems, including:

  • Infertility
  • Breast and reproductive system cancer
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Early puberty
  • Behavioral changes in children
  • Resistance to chemotherapy treatments

BPA is found in everything from plastic food and drink containers to the lining of tin cans as well as the coating of 40% of receipt paper used throughout the world. These chemicals can leach into the food and drink products you consume and make their way into your body.

We become what we drink and eat – or what we eat or drink from.

So there you have it! There’s a lot of conflicting information about the safety of the chemicals that make up everyday life and most of the scientific research is completed by the companies who manufacturer these said chemicals.

Carefully trim the plastic away from the coffee sack. Be careful not to damage the sack.
This may help with decreasing your exposure to harmful BPA or BPS.
Place the trimmed coffee pod into your coffee machine and enjoy.

It’s important to remember that many scientific studies are sponsored by large corporations and receive funding to prove what these companies are advertising.

You can enjoy the health benefits of coffee every day, but be selective in the equipment that you use, and always demand safety first as a consumer. Your body will thank you for that.

Those stickers you see on fruits and vegetables tell the tale of their life whether they are organic, conventional or GMO grown.

Printed on that sticker is a code that tells us where and how our fruits and vegetables actually are grown! You just have to know how to read the labels and the PLU number. It’s actually a lot easier than you’d imagine.

You know those stickers that can be found on most fruits and veggies in grocery stores worldwide are know as PLU’s (price lookup codes).

I’m sure for those who work or used to work in a grocery store, those stickers are burned into our minds (I am one of those people). They usually have a bar code on them for scanning and a PLU code, which helps your friendly neighborhood cashier identify what type of produce you’re buying.

 PLU’s mean Organic, GMO or Conventional grown and identifies the item.

But these unassuming stickers are more telling than you’d think. While the PLU is the “price lookup” number and identifies the fruit or veggie, it also helps to identify something else: how the produce was grown. By correctly reading this code, you can tell if the fruit was genetically modified, organically grown or produced with chemical fertilizers, fungicides, or herbicides

 PLU basics for the consumer help with organic selection

Here’s the basics of what you need to know about the truth behind PLU codes.

  1. If there are only four numbers in the PLU, this means that the produce was grown conventionally or “traditionally” with the use of pesticides. The last four letters (or only four, in this case) of the PLU code are simply what kind of vegetable or fruit you’re buying. An example is that all bananas are labeled with the code of 4011.
  2. If there are five numbers in the PLU code, and the number starts with “8”, this tells you that the item is a genetically modified fruit or vegetable. Genetically modified fruits and vegetables have been tampered with in an unnatural way; essentially, produce that has been genetically modified was created in a lab or over decades of artificial selection, and cannot be found in nature. A genetically engineered (GE or GMO) banana would be: 84011
  3. If there are five numbers in the PLU code, and the number starts with “9”, this tells you that the produce was grown organically and is not genetically modified. An organic banana would be: 94011

Interestingly enough, the adhesive used to attach the stickers is considered food-grade, but the stickers themselves aren’t safe to consume.

GMO corn fed rats die early from cancer tumors

(Natural News) Shock findings in new GMO study: Rats fed lifetime of GM corn grow horrifying tumors, 70% of females die early.

Eating genetically modified corn (GM corn) and consuming trace levels of Monsanto’s Roundup chemical fertilizer caused rats to develop horrifying tumors, widespread organ damage, and premature death. That’s the conclusion of a shocking new study that looked at the long-term effects of consuming Monsanto’s genetically modified corn.

The study has been deemed “the most thorough research ever published into the health effects of GM food crops and the herbicide Roundup on rats.” News of the horrifying findings is spreading like wildfire across the internet, with even the mainstream media seemingly in shock over the photos of rats with multiple grotesque tumors… tumors so large the rats even had difficulty breathing in some cases. GMOs may be the new thalidomide.

It reported, “Scientists found that rats exposed to even the smallest amounts, developed mammary tumors and severe liver and kidney damage as early as four months in males, and seven months for females.”

It goes on to say: “The animals on the GM diet suffered mammary tumors, as well as severe liver and kidney damage. The researchers said 50 percent of males and 70 percent of females died prematurely, compared with only 30 percent and 20 percent in the control group.”

The study, led by Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen, was the first ever study to examine the long-term (lifetime) effects of eating GMOs. You may find yourself thinking it is absolutely astonishing that no such studies were ever conducted before GM corn was approved for widespread use by the USDA and FDA, but such is the power of corporate lobbying and corporate greed.

The study was published in The Food & Chemical Toxicology Journal and was just presented at a news conference in London.

Findings from the study

Here are some of the shocking findings from the study:

• Up to 50% of males and 70% of females suffered premature death.

• Rats that drank trace amounts of Roundup (at levels legally allowed in the water supply) had a 200% to 300% increase in large tumors.

• Rats fed GM corn and traces of Roundup suffered severe organ damage including liver damage and kidney damage.

• The study fed these rats NK603, the Monsanto variety of GM corn that’s grown across North America and widely fed to animals and humans. This is the same corn that’s in your corn-based breakfast cereal, corn tortillas and corn snack chips.

The Daily Mail is reporting on some of the reaction to the findings:

France’s Jose Bove, vice-chairman of the European Parliament’s commission for agriculture and known as a fierce opponent of GM, called for an immediate suspension of all EU cultivation and import authorisations of GM crops. ‘This study finally shows we are right and that it is urgent to quickly review all GMO evaluation processes,’ he said in a statement. ‘National and European food security agencies must carry out new studies financed by public funding to guarantee healthy food for European consumers.’ (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/artic…)
